    Biography of Karel Appel

    Early Life and Education

    Karel Appel was a Dutch artist, sculptor, and graphic designer.

    He was born in Amsterdam into a family of hairdressers. After finishing school, he initially worked at his father's hair salon, but at the age of 18, he left his parental home to pursue a career as an artist. In , he received a scholarship to the Academy of Fine Arts in the Dutch capital.
